Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast from Rome

Rome to Pompeii is about 240 km, and Positano is another hour and a half beyond that. It sounds impossible in a day, and on your own it nearly is. On a tour it is a long but well-oiled 13 hours. Here is how the day works, what it costs and who should think twice.

How the day runs

The most-booked day trip from Rome (4.5/5 from 7,125 reviews) leaves at about 7:10 from Piazza del Popolo, by the fountain with the lions and the obelisk, with Flaminio metro on line A a few steps away. The coach reaches Pompeii in about 3 hours with a 20-minute break at Cassino, and a licensed guide walks you through the ruins for about 2 hours with skip-the-line entry. After a lunch break (not included), the tour continues down the Amalfi Coast road to Positano for about 2 hours of free time, then drives back to Rome for the evening. Expect roughly 6 hours on the coach in total. Luggage is not allowed on board, so this is not a way to move hotels.

Tour, train or private driver?

The tour from Rome costs from about $139 per person, including transport, the Pompeii ticket reservation and the guide. Doing it yourself means a high-speed train to Naples (about 1 hour 10 minutes each way), the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii, then buses or ferries to the coast: possible for Pompeii alone, but reaching Positano and back to Rome the same evening leaves almost no time there. Be honest about the trade-offs, though. It is a very long day, the coast road is winding (take something if you get carsick), and the time in each place is limited.
